JOSEPH MANSELL
Two embossed and pierced paperlace valentine cards, both stamp marked Mansell, both American in design, one with a satin centre applied with silvered details and hand-coloured flowers, the other with a manuscript verse and the date 'February 1848', the verse reads 'In vain I have waited for a token/Alas for an approbative sign/But my fondest charms are broken/And my hopes I must resign/I have thought I was unworthy/And your silence proves contempt/Though I can admire beauty/From its affects I am not exempt/Over all, "conclavity throws a veil"/Do not insist to know for you/cannot prevail', 10 x 8in., c. 1840-50.
