A unusual late 19th century 14 inch gauge mahogany cast iron and brass railway aprentice cut-away demonstration model of an inside cylinder 2-4-0 locomotive chassis and running gear, with makers plate engraved 'G.Cussons Model Maker, Manchester' -- 49¾in (126.5cm) long.
With cylinders and valve chests cut away to reveal steam ports and ways and the relationship between valves and pistons, the valves controlled through Stephensons link reverse, with wooden reach rod with locking mechanism mounted as on the cab floor. Additional details include wooden frames and stretchers, brass motion with pierced eccentrics, brass coupling rods and cast iron wheels. Finished in varnish, black and polished brightwork, the frame stamped '24'.
