Lot Essay

Cantelo, at the time of making this lathe probably of Bargate St. Southampton, was originally a native of the Isle of Wight and one of a family of gunsmiths, to whose trade he was apprenticed. He became an engineer/machinist and inventor after moving to Southampton, marrying and having a family of sons who eventually assisted in his business. He eventually disappeared while on a foreign journey amid some mystery. A much more full account can be found in the Bulletin of the Society of Ornamental Turners, No.74p 175. The present lathe appears to have been little used.
