Lot Essay

Reginald Dixon was stationed with the Royal Navy in Freetown in 1944 when he commissioned the Temne carver Ali to decorate the gourd for him. When the self-taught Ali was asked to explain the meaning of the female figure sprouting foliage, he replied that it represented an evil spirit which lived in the bush outside Freetown.
