This chair is likely to have come from the same workshops as a set acquired around 1770 for Penicuik House and attributed to Messrs. Francis and William Brodie of Edinburgh, while the reed-enriched and splayed legs correspond to those of a 'Chinese chair' of this period attributed to Messrs. Young, Hamilton and Trotter (see F. Bamford, Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers, 1983, pls.25 and 46)
