Lot Essay

Sir William visited Yuste on 6 June 1849 (cf.p.472) and himself sketched this massive walnut tree. The larger watercolour was originally sketched by Lt. Col. The Hon. H. Percy in 1851 and both were then used as a basis for these watercolours by J.F. D'Egville, apparently in 1853, aquatinted by S.J. Hodson, and appearing in the fourth edition of Sir William's important work.
