Lot Essay

Matilda Harriet (1802-1857) was the second daughter of Thomas, 7th Earl of Elgin and 11th of Kincardine (1766-1841), who purchased the Elgin marbles or Parthenon frieze while Ambassador to the Porte. She married in October, 1839, Sir John Maxwell of Pollok, the uncle of Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, 9th Bt.
