Lot Essay


Lady Anna Maria Leslie Melville, second daughter of the 8th Earl of Leven and first wife of Sir William Stirling Maxwell (1818-1878), was born on 28 December 1826. She married in Paris in 1865, the year her husband succeeded his maternal uncle as baronet and added the name "Maxwell" to his own. She was the great-grandmother of the present Archibald Stirling of Keir, who descends from her second son, Archibald.
