Lot Essay

Atlantis and Asturias were two passenger steamers built for the Royal Mail Lines' South American routes and both survived into the 1950's. Atlantis, launched originally as Andes in 1913, served as an auxiliary cruiser in the Great War and was then operated as a hospital ship during the Second World War, by which time her name had been changed to Atlantis (in 1930). Asturias, the larger of the two and launched in 1925, spent most of the last war as an armed merchant cruiser, subsequently became a troop transport, and only returned to peacetime sailings in 1949.
