Lot Essay

The frieze of the Borghese vase depicts frenzied maenads supporting the intoxicated Silenus. Although discovered at an earlier date, the Antique vase is recorded in the Borghese family collection at the Villa Borghese in 1645. It is currently in the Louvre.
