An unique and important brass and steel patent model of a single horizontal double acting cylinder stationary engine, the patent documents describing an engine with three pistons, patented by R.Beck, Watchmaker and Dentist, Bradford, Patent No.3380 dated 30th December 1865. Model dimensions -- 12 x 15½in (30.5 x 39.5cm)
The model with unlagged open ended cylinder 1½in bore x 1in stroke, with two pistons (one missing), one connected to a hollow piston rod with forked connecting rod and jibbed and cottered big end, the other free to move on a rod supported in the hollow piston rod and in twin connected to two barrelled side rods via a crosshead, to two cranks set at 180 to the centre crank. Further details include overhead valve chest with decorative inlet and outlet manifolds, drain cocks with bone handles, the crankshaft supported on pierced trunnions and spoked flywheel. Finished in green and lacquered brass with silver plated brightwork, all supported on a tinplate plinth painted to simulate stonework.
Documentation includes the original Licence granted to Richard Beck with wax seal in lacquered metal box, Letters Patent, original printed specification sealed 26th June 1866, receipts variously dated December, April, June and July 1865/6 and other documents, contained in a green leather covered wooden box embossed in gilt with the Royal Coat of Arms over Wm.Tasker PATENT AGENT OLD MARKET HALIFAX. (leather torn and worn in places).
