The Grubb family were important makers of astronomical instruments in the 19th Century. Howard Grubb (later Sir Howard) joined his father Thomas in 1865 and assisted in the production of a 48 inch Cassegrain reflector with metal speculum (1865-1868). In 1868 Thomas took over the firm and it is likely that this instrument dates from this period
