A 2pp. a.l.s. by Winston Churchill, dated 105 Mount Street W., 30 November 1900, to S. Whittaker, discussing the appointment of magistrates in Oldham and asking: "Why more magistrates should be appointed? -- as for instance the straggling nature of the Borough -- and any other circumstances that would justify the increase ... Also I must have a list of Magistrates recommended, among whom, there should be at least one Radical;" together with the original envelope, hand-written by Churchill, post-marked: "Cheltenham Nov. 30 1900" and "London Dec. 1 1900."

In July 1900, Churchill was adopted as Conservative candidate for Oldham in the General Election and he duly won the seat in October. This letter, written only a month after the election and on his 26th birthday, reveals the strength of his involvement in local politics and administration.
