Bishopsbourne, Kent, to Lady Millais, discussing his and his wife's
health: "I am not quite myself yet. This winter has been very trying to my worthless framework," and commiserating with Lady Millais on a recent loss: "I feel dear Lady Millais that there is nothing to bear you through these hours of cruel suspense but your devoted courage ... I can hardly bear to write about this! ... Nothing but a fear to intrude on your grief has kept me away -- and frankly my heart failed me too ..." (7)
