ALBERT SCHWEITZER (1875-1965)
A collection of literary memorabilia, consisting of about 75 a.l.s. and t.l.s. from workers and supporters of Albert Schweitzer to his friend Emil Mettler. One 4pp. t.l.s. by L.M. Russell, dated Strone, Holy Loch, Argyll, 3rd November 1936, shows frustration at the lack of information coming back from Lambaréné: "The Doctor writes such rotten letters that I never know anything!" another 2pp. t.l.s. from Mrs. Russell dated Hotel Guggisberg, Burgdorf, 20th September 1942, complains that she had not been informed that an "Englishman" had stayed at the Hospital in Labaréné: "It's so queer that he never seems to want to bring people interested in him together. It is part of his general obtuseness in matters of practical psychology;" another 1p. t.l.s., dated the 22nd February 1945 shows amazement: "that Mrs. Corbett Ashby seems to be supporting the scheme -- but then after all she only knows the polite civilised Albert Schweitzer of Europe, not the African barbarian!"; other correspondents include his biographer Dr. George Seaver; together with photographs showing Schweitzer in Lambaréné, and at Emil Mettler's restaurant in October 1955 with Bertrand Russell, Vaughan Williams, Lord Russel and being sketched by Augustus John (one signed by John). Among various books is a copy of Frederick Franck's Days with Albert Schweitzer. A Lambaréné Landscape, London, Peter Davies, 1959, 8°, signed and inscribed by the author, with an original pen and ink drawing by Franck of Schweitzer. (a lot)
