THE COLLECTION OF RONALD AND ROISIN SHOCKLEDGE Ronald Shockledge began collecting Staffordshire figures as a child. His original inspiration was a theatrical one, and the first figure he purchased was one of David Garrick in a local market. Thereafter, whenever he went on holiday with his parents, he purchased another. His collection grew to include the full range of political, military, royal and religious figures that were made by the Staffordshire factories. His collection was formed through a network of dealers and collectors in his local area. The collecting activity was in many ways a social one and many of his contacts became close friends. When Commander P.D.Gordon Pugh began writing his book on Staffordshire figures, it was to Mr. Shockledge and his friends that he came. As a result, the Shockledge Collection forms a key documentary group within Commander Pugh's researches, and many of Mr. and Mrs. Shockledge's figures are illustrated in the book on Staffordshire Portrait Figures.
