Thomas Ottewill was one of the best of the early British camera maker's in terms of the quality of his products and innovative design ideas. He was established in business by 1851. By 1864 the he had taken on a partner and the company became Ottewill, Collis and Co. and is last recorded in 1868.
The Photographic Journal described Ottewill's 'Registered Double Folding Camera' in detail 'few [cameras] perhaps have been so simple as that invented by Mr Ottewill, and there is none which more fully combines the requisite strength and firmness with a high degree of portability and efficiency...its sliding character renders it equally applicable for views and portraits'.
Wilkinson and Son were professional photographers in Sunderland. They undertook work for the local hospital producing prints and lantern slides for training medical students, in which the previous lot was probably employed.
