Lot Essay

Anna Gurney (died 1849), daughter of Joseph Gurney of Earlham Hall, Norwich and his first wife Jane, daughter of John Birbeck, married John C. Backhouse. Following in the strong family traditions of Quaker beliefs, (she was first cousin to Elizabeth Fry) Anna went to America "on a mission of love".
