The sculpture shows the moment where Tannhauser tries to escape from the Venusberg in vain while Venus uses all her charms to keep him under her spell. He finally manages to get away by means of an image of the Virgin Mary. The legend is widely known by the opera Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner.
