Of Regence style, each backplate in form of a satyr-mask within a cartouche of scrolling rockwork headed by a shell, issuing a twisted foliated branch terminating in a dragon-head holding a scallop-shapped drip-pan, the nozzle in form of a thistle, fitted for electricity (2)

The 'picturesque' foliated and dragon-headed branches relate to a mid-l8th Century pattern illustrated in a contemporary brass-worker's catalogue (see T. Crom, An Eighteenth Century English Brass Hardware Catalogue, Florida, 1994, pl. IV). Related 18th Century wall lights with head-centred cartouches are at Schloss Charlottenburg, Berlin and illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P.
