Lot Essay

This set of richly-carved Russian chairs demonstrates the opulant Palace style of the 1820s and '30s, and relates to seat-furniture in several palaces in and around St. Petersburg and Moscow, including the Catherine Palace, Pushkin, the Hermitage, but also in the Presidential Palace in Helsinki (A. Chenevière, Russian Furniture, the Golden Age 1780-1840, London, 1988, pp. 195-239).
