Lot Essay

This figure, with its rounded face and heavily-lidded, almond-shaped eyes, is comparable to a number of known works of Burgundian origin, including a group of the Annunciation in Yonne province (Quarré, loc. cit.), particularly the figure of the Virgin Mary.

For a general discussion of Burgundian sculpture of the period, please refer to the note for lot 104, which is stylistically closely related to the present lot.
