Second quarter 18th century, probably Rome
Each with a later grey-veined white marble top, with a moulded border, above a pierced strapwork and acanthus apron centred by an Apollo mask, the sides with conforming pieced work, on square tapering panelled legs headed by S-scrolls and joined by a scrolling H-shaped stretcher, on capital feet, one back leg spliced, lacking two leg scrolls, restorations to the carving

Lot Essay

The boldly scrolling volute carving of the frieze, typical of Roman consoles, in combination with tapering supports carved with delicate foliate tendrils, relate these tables to an example in the collection of Principe Francesco Ruspoli, illustrated in G. Lizzani, Il Mobile Romano, Milan, 1970, p. 75, fig. 115.
