AN ANTWERP MYTHOLOGICAL TAPESTRY
Second half 17th Century
Woven in wools and silks, depicting an Oriental prince courting a lady but being divided by water, above the pair a goddess on a cloud, to the right a blackamoor attending to a horse, to the right a fountain surmounted by a figure of Amor, in the background the facade of a baroque palace and formal gardens, within a floral border with fruits, birds and masks, centred to the top and bottom by a medallion underneath a draped canapy and flanked by cherry-picking parrots, the lower corners with fish faces, within a yellow and brown outer slip, stenciled to the back '4572', reduced in width to both sides, reweaving to the right lower part of the border, reweaving to the light silks, especially to the sky, the brown outer slip partially rewoven to top and bottom
