Second half 16th Century, possibly Enghien
Woven in wools and silks, depicting two huntsmen and their dogs hunting down a deer in a forest with various birds, and deers and a heron, a leopard and an eagle in the forground, two further hunter emerging from a town in the background, within a flower-filled entrelac border, patching and reweaving, lacking borders
7 ft. 5 in. (226 cm.) high; 10 ft. 4 in. (314 cm.) wide

Lot Essay

A similar game-park tapestry including a unicorn and rhinoceros and with similar inner guilloche-banded slip from the collection of Ritter Rudolph von Gutmann was sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 11 December 1987, lot 175, and again at Sotheby's New York, 31 January 1997, lot 243.
