A FLEMISH HISTORICAL TAPESTRY FRAGMENT
Second half 17th Century
Woven in wools, depicting a young knight holding a shield with a lion-mask surrounded by four other knights, standing in front of a stature of a crowned man holding a downwards pointing arrow, in an interior with columns with a landscape visible through an open colonade, later bage and brown outer slip, minor areas of reweaving, especially to the pale ivory and brown threads in the lower right corner, reduced in size, with vertical cut to the right of the figures with consequential re-weaving
8 ft. (244 cm.) high; 7 ft. 10 in. (239 cm.) wide

Lot Essay

This tapestry is almost certainly a later verwsion of an early 16th Century subject, such as Les Saisons de Lucas and Les Mois de Lucas which were woven at Gobelins in the late 17th Century after tapestries originally executed in 1535. The slightly acidic colouring of the tapestry can be compared to that used in the Paris workshops of the second half 17th Century and in some Brussells workshops.
