Signed Tomotada (Kyoto), Edo Period (Late 18th Century)
Katabori, stained boxwood; a model of a reclining water-buffalo with his legs folded under his body, his head turned slightly to the right, his halter carved in low relief and trailing over his back towards his tail, a rope harness around his neck, his eyes inlaid in horn, the ribs powerfully modelled and stained, the delicate hairwork slightly worn from prolonged handling, the himotoshi formed by a large and a small hole in the underside, signed with incised and stained characters on a raised rectangular reserve under the left haunch Tomotada
