This lot is sold with a copy of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, published by J.M. Dent and Sons, Ltd., London and E.P. Dutton and Company, New York, (1922) and a letter and receipt of purchase by the artist.

Lot Essay

Armfield worked for Dent from 1910. He based these illustrations upon his stage production of the play, produced with his wife in California in 1919, in which colours and compositions expressed "active movement upon the stage".
