GARDNER, Isabella Stewart. A Choice of Books from the Library of Isabella Stewart Gardner, Fenway Court. [Boston: The Merrymount Press], 1906. 8°. Textual corrections in pencil. Uncut in original cloth-backed marbled boards.
Updike was so upset by the very bad descriptions and the many mistakes made by Mrs Gardner that he refused to have the imprimatur of the Merrymount Press on the title-page. The manuscript corrections and additions are in the hand of Mrs Gardner's private secretary, biographer, and first director of the Museum, Morris Carter. Despite this, the catalogue is still riddled with mistakes and misprints.
