The Pelican was an old alternative to the more widely-used dental key: both, when properly in place, would remove a tooth, root and all, when time was of the essence. The first successful extraction under ether took place in Rochester, New York, in January 1842, and this technique was introduced to the U.K. from December 19th 1846.
