WILLIAM APPLEYARD
Prior to playing football on the full-time basis, Bill Appleyard was a North Sea fisherman, this earning him the nickname of 'cockles'. He started his career in football with Cleethorpes before joining Grimsby Town. Following relegation to Division 2, in 1903, Appleyard joined Newcastle United. He was an immediate success with United, and playing in the centre-forward position he gave opposing defences and in particular goalkeepers a very hard time. His ferocious shot often culminated in both goalkeeper and ball ending up in the net. He narrowly missed-out on playing for England and was reserve for the national side against Scotland in 1908. In June of 1908 he joined Oldham, thereafter moving to Grimsby before returning to the North East to work at the Vickers factory. He remained with them until 1947 and died in Newcastle in January 1958.
Between seasons 1902-03 and 1907-08 he made 128 League appearances for United, scoring 71 goals. He also played seventeen F.A. Cup matches for them, scoring an incredible sixteen goals.
