THE GLIKSTEN FAMILY AND CHARLTON ATHLETIC F.C. The brothers Albert and Stanley Gliksten were owners of one of the largest timber merchants in Europe, Gliksten and Son Ltd. They became involved with football in the early 1930's with Clapton Orient, working in an advisory capacity with Arsenal when the North London club had designs on making Orient a nursery club. This met with little enthusiasm from the Football Association who immediately blocked any notion Arsenal and the Glikstens has on this idea. At the beginning of 1932 Charlton Athletic were in danger of going out of business. At this point the Gliksten brothers stepped in with a rescue package, taking over the ownership of the club in February 1932. So began a relationship between the Gliksten family and Charlton which was to last 50 years and transform the little known South East London club into a very successful First Division side. During the Gliksten's time in charge of the club, Charlton created English League history, pre-war by winning promotion from the Third Division (South) to First Division runners-up in two years; and in the next two seasons finishing fourth and third respectively. The Gliksten's reign, with legendary manager Jimmy Seed in charge, brought added glamour to the club with four Wembley finals (two during the War years), culminating in finally winning the F.A. Cup in 1947. Albert Arnold Gliksten (Chairman February 1932-December 1951). Born Hackney 7th May 1898, died Belize, British Honduras, 22nd December 1951. Stanley Gabriel Gliksten (Director February 1932; Chairman January 1952). Born Hackney, 13th August 1892, died Buckinghamshire, 22nd February 1962. Edward Michael Gliksten (Director August 1957; Chairman May 1962-June 1962). Born 1938 (Son of Stanley). The club was sold to Mark Hulyer in 1962 through his company Marman Ltd. Edward resigned as a Director of the board on 29th December 1982. David Reuben Gliksten (Director 20th December 1956, resigning on 8th May 1970). Son of Stanley, he died at home in Ireland, October 1979. We are grateful to Colin Cameron, Charlton Athletic's Statistician for providing the above information.
