Lot Essay

The majority of photographs are street scenes and topography in South Africa including Durban, Cape Town (a panorama and others), Jamestown, East London, Johannesburg and Pretoria. One album of military subjects relating to the Boer War includes portraits of "Boer General De Wet", General French, Boer prisoners and farming based mostly around Beaufort West. Another includes African portraits and views of the De Beers diamond mine at Kimberley and there are a few subjects in Madeira, Tenerife and Australia, these latter mostly views in New South Wales by Hitch & Co.
