The above programme, which pre-dates the formation of the Football League (1888), features two of the greatest club sides of the period.
Notts County were formed in 1862 and were regarded as pioneers of Association Football. They became tenants of Trent Bridge in 1881, and while they occupied the ground it became one of the greatest homes of Association Football. The following year they reached the semi-final of the F.A.Cup and were looked upon as one of the most powerful sides in the country. They made great efforts to retain their amatuer status, but succumbed to professionalism in season 1885-86. Amongst the many famous players in the County side above are Gunn, Moore, Cursham, H.B.Daft (all England Internationalists), and C.F.Dobson (Ireland Internationalist). Daft was to play in both the 1891 and 1894 F.A.Cup finals, picking-up a winner's medal in the 1894 final, ironically against Bolton Wanderers. The Bolton Wanderers side above, also featured two England Internationalists, in Davenport and Weir
