The Smith brothers of mauchlin in Ayrshire were one of many firms to manufacture tartanware boxes in 19th century and the village gave its name to this ware. Snuff boxes, cigar cases, caddies and stamp boxes predominated and it is unusual to find such a large piece of furniture incorporating tartanware.
