A 17th Century Nuremberg ivory dyptich dial signed on the compass dial face CONRAD KARNER the reverse dated EPACTA IVLIANI ANNO 1629 EPACTA GREGORI ANNO *, coloured with black, green, yellow and red, with borders, the obverse plate with foliate decoration bordering the wind rose with thirty-two numbered points, with sixteen abbreviated directions labelled in German, with brass arm and hand-shaped pointer vane, with positioning points and brass clasps (detached), the pin-gnomon dial with zodiacal symbols and hour scale, positioning holes for string gnomon 42°, 45°, 48°, 51°, and marked for the latitudes of eighteen European cities marked alternately in red and black, the horizontal dial with four scales, for latitiudes 42°, 45°, 48°, 51/f, the outermost scale divided 4-12-8, between 2 and 3 the scales have latitudes 52°,48°,45°,42°, the dial marked with Italian and Babylonian hours, the compass (lacking needle) with twin hunting horn symbols, the cardinal points represented by SEPT OR.., MERI, OCCI, signed CONRAD KARNER at bottom, with side-mounted locking arm, the reverse with lunar volvelles with epact scales begining 23 and 13, with four brass pillar stands - 3¾in. Lot Essay

The Karner family were established dial makers in the 16th and 17th Centuries. Conrad (1571-1632) used the hunting horn as his symbol. He lived and worked in Kartausergasse in Nuremberg from 1627-32.
