A fine fan the verso painted with a portrait of Madame Marie Adelaide de France, third daughter of King Louis XV of France, and two shaped vignettes of figures in landscape, the reserves painted with pink and blue flowers and grey and gold decoration, the recto with Jupiter seducing Diana, and smaller vignettes of a lady and cupid, the ivory sticks carved and pierced with a lady and putti and two chinoiserie scenes, and with a frieze of chinoiserie figures seen through oval windows - 10.5in., Flemish or English, circa 1750 - in contemporary English box with later inscription Mrs. Thos. Somers Cocks, 42 Gt. Cumberland Place, Marble Arch, and a Duvelleroy London label 167 Regent St., Paris 17, Passage de Panoramas, also inscribed No. 94, 23 and 20030 (slight damage to guardsticks and sticks)

Lot Essay

Madame Marie Adelaide de France was born in 1732 and died in Trieste in 1800. She ward the third and favorite daughter of Louis XV.

Mrs. Somers Cocks (1867 - 1936) was grandmother of the vendor. Her husband Thomas Vernon Somers Cocks was a partner in Cocks Biddulph & Co., the Bankers.
