Lot Essay

Christopher Lennox-Boyd has pointed out that the subject of the picture on this fan and on the New Gypsy Fortune Telling Fan, Schreiber mounted 332 derive with small cheap changes of detail from James Northcote's The Village Doctress originally engraved in 1783. Another fan, Schreiber mounted 60 shows the composition unaltered and is probably part of a furniture print, possibly one published by James Walker who engraved and published the original version as well as publishing a small version engraved by Robert Marcuard.
