Lot Essay

Originally rigged as a snow, the United, 297 tons, was built by J.P. Denton & Co. of Hartlepool for Ord & Co. in 1846. Her first master was Captain John Taylor and she worked the Mediterranean for a year before tranferring to the South American trade, going regularly to Coquimbo and then Valparaiso (Chile). Re-rigged as a brig in 1854 and put onto West Indies routes under a new master, she was sold to new owners in 1860 after which she traded as a coaster. Sold again several times, she became the Norwegian schooner Hannah in 1882 and was finally reduced to a lighter in 1895.
