Lot Essay

The Betsey Hall,151 tons, was built at Liverpool in 1833 and although seemingly rigged as a brigantine was actually classified by Lloyd's as a schooner. Named after a family member of Hall & Co., her original owners, she began life trading to Buenos Aires but, by 1845, had been sold to Blackaller & Co. who ran her to St. Thomas's in the West Indies for a number of a number of years. By 1858, following re-decking and extensive repairs, she was in the possession of Ashton & Co. of Liverpool, and was last noted in the 1864 Lloyd's Registers which are overstamped "wrecked"
