ALCIATI, Andrea. Emblemata cum Claudii Minois Commentariis, Leyden: ex Officina Plantiniana 1608, 2 vols. in one, 8°, engraved portrait, woodcut illustrations (some browning and occasional soiling throughout), contemporary vellum (a little worn); and another emblem book by Sieur de Royaumont. (2)
A revised and enlarged edition of the one issued by Plantin in 1577, with an extensive commentary by Claude Mignault from Dijon (1536-1606). Regarded as the most celebrated of all commentaries to this work, it gives a minute description and interpretation of every emblem, introduced by a Syntagma de Symbolis or general statement on the purpose and ideas of emblem writers. This edition also includes a life of Alciati by the commentator.
Both Plantin editions have a new set of woodcuts, redesigned from the French editions. Despite their similarities to the Salomon and Eskrich designs, they show originality and imagination, and are largely the work of Virgil Solis.
