GIOVIO, Paolo. Dialogo dell' Imprese Militari et Amorose, Lyon: Guillaume Rouillé, 1574, 8°, woodcut portrait on verso of title, 138 woodcuts of devices (some browning to text, repair to title), 18th-century vellum. [Baudrier IX, p.348; Praz p.353; BMC Italian Books p.304]
"Giovio is the inventor and representative of the science of Imprese, as much as Alciati is the inventor of emblems" (Volkmann). The work, in the form of a conversation with Lodovico Domenichi, discusses the background of this art and states the requirements of the perfect Imprese -- a species of emblems which represents the insignia and devices of celebrated men. The first illustrated edition was published in Lyons in 1559.
