Lot Essay

The Antique marble group of Diana with a stag is currently in the Louvre, Paris. It is two metres in height and thought to be a copy executed under the Roman Empire of bronze originals of the second half of the fourth century.

It has been suggested that the group is the work of Leochares, the same sculptor who could well be responsible for the Apollo Belvedere. Indeed, it may have been his intention that the two statues be designed as companions.
