Lot Essay

These curious pieces, with the Arms of Saxony, sometimes quartered with Poland, and with busts of rulers, equestrian portraits and inscriptions are loosely based on the thaler (crown-size) silver coins of the area. The legends, however, are mostly rendered in German, unlike their numismatic prototype in which Latin would be used.

For comparable examples, see Edward H. Pinto, Treen and other wooden bygones, pl. 231. (Bell & Hyman Limited).
