Lot Essay

Durham, Joseph, 1814-77.

This eminent mid-19th century sculptor first exhibeted at the Royal Academy 1835. Between that year and 1878 one hundred and twenty eight works were shown, the last being after his death in 1877. Durham was elected an associate of the academy in 1888.

Further works by this artist include 'Brittannia Presiding over the Four Quarters of the Globe' which was awarded the first prize in a competition to select a memorial for the Great Exhibition. In 1863 he executed a statue of the Prince Consort which was placed in front of the Albert Hall. He also made a number of fountains including the imposing example at Gloucester Gate, Regents Park.
