Lot Essay

McKellen's patents of 1884 for improvements to cameras were innovative and the design was widely copied. McKellen himself took his designs to Joshua Billcliff the establish Manchester camera maker who produced the camera to McKellen's design. McKellen was awarded the Photographic Society's first Prize Medal for his design.
