This Bruno Bernard portrait of Marilyn published on the cover of Laff magazine, January, 1947, was the image which initiated her first contract with a film studio - 20th Century Fox.

..The L.A.Times today published a photo showing the RKO motion picture magnate, Howard Hughes, in an iron lung clutching the just-released 'Laff' magazine color (sic) pin-up cover I shot on Norma. In an accompanying story the notorious gossip columnist Hedda Hopper wrote, "Howard Hughes, must be on the road to recovery, he turned over in his iron lung and wants to know more about the lovely cover girl, Norma Jean". I SOS'ed Darryl Zanuck, "I suggest you sign up the beautiful child-woman, Norma Jean Baker, before Howard Hughes"...

According to Bernard's journal the photographer instructed Marilyn to aim for a specific expression in her pin-up poses ...Never put hot on hot...Let your curves tell it all, and counteract the body language with a complete look of innocence...Blend waif with Venus and you'll create combustion in photos....
