A SCOTTISH GEORGE III GILTWOOD OVERMANTEL MIRROR

The triple divisioned mirror plates divided by fluted pilasters with acanthus-carved capitals, enclosed by a pierced frame carved with acanthus, c-scrolls, rockwork and floral chains, the shaped pediment with two pierced lattice panels supporting confronting c-scrolls joined by a pagoda-style pediment with flowering bud finial, traces of original gilding, damages and now fitted with four candle-brackets

Lot Essay

This tripartite landscape or overmantel glass, with rusticated pilasters, flowered trellis and serpentined frame entwined by oak branches, is designed in the George II picturesque manner popularised by the carver Thomas Johnson's, Collection of Designs, 1758
