Lot Essay

This library-table top with hinge, ratchet and rising book-rest featured on the 1730's trade-card of Thomas Potter (see C. Gilbert, John Channon, London, 1993 p.19); while this table pattern, with columnar inner leg, is featured in Thomas Chippendale's, Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754 (pl 49). A similar table, with side candle-supports, was sold at Christie's King Street, 24 February . 1994, lot 131.
