Norman Thelwell was born in Birkenhead on 3rd May, 1923. He studied at the Liverpool College of Art and taught at Wolverhampton School of Art, 1950-57. A regular contributor to Punch from 1952, he worked as a cartoonist for newspapers and first produced his own comic books Angels on Horseback, in 1957 (lot 179). A talented commercial designer, his comic inventions found their way onto posters, book jackets, greeting cards and tea towels. Many of these original designs are presented here for the first time.
